Causes of Dandruff

Dandruff is a very common chronic scalp problem marked by flaking of the skin on your scalp. Dandruff isn’t infectious or severe; however, it can be embarrassing and sometimes not easy to treat. Normally, dandruff can be controlled. Mild cases of dandruff need only daily shampooing with a gentle cleanser. However stubborn cases of dandruff mostly require medicated shampoos.

The symptoms of dandruff are easy to notice: white, oily-looking flakes of dead skin that dot your hair and shoulders, and a probably itchy, scaly scalp. The condition usually gets worse during the fall and winter, and improve during the summer.

Causes of Dandruff:

Irritated and oily skin: This is one of the most common causes of dandruff, is marked by red, greasy skin enclosed with flaky white or yellow scales. The condition may affect your scalp and other areas rich in oil glands, like your eyebrows, the sides of your nose, backs of your ears, your groin area, your breastbone and at times your armpits.

Not enough shampooing: If you don’t wash your hair frequently, it results in a buildup of oils and skin cells from your scalp, causing dandruff.

A fungus Malassezia: Malassezia resides on the scalps of most adults. But, sometimes, it irritates the scalp and may cause more skin cells to grow. This extra skin cells die and drop off, making a white and flaky appearance in your hair or on your clothes.

Dryness of your skin Flakes because of dry skin are usually smaller and less oily than those from other causes of dandruff. And, redness or inflammation is not likely. You may most likely have dry skin on other parts of the body, like your legs and arms also.

Sensitivity to hair care products: At times sensitivities to certain components in hair care products like shampoo, conditioners or hair dyes can cause a red, itchy, scaly scalp which may cause dandruff in your scalp.
